Old Delhi

Shah Jahan's city from 1639. The Red Fort, two kilometres of red sandstone wall and the seat of Mughal power until 1857. Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque. Chandni Chowk and the specialist lanes running off it — silver at Dariba Kalan, wedding trim at Kinari Bazaar, the spice market at Khari Baoli. This stretch is covered on foot or by rickshaw; cars cannot enter.

New Delhi

Lutyens' capital from 1911. India Gate and Rajpath, Rashtrapati Bhavan from the forecourt, Humayun's Tomb — the Taj Mahal's direct prototype — and Qutub Minar with its unrusting iron pillar.

Eight hours is enough to do both properly rather than photograph them.

Worth knowing

The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. Jama Masjid closes to visitors at prayer times and requires covered shoulders and knees, shoes off. Scarves are available at the gate.
