Delhi for people who have already done the monuments

This is a two-day pairing of birds and temples on the city's eastern edge, and it suits a second or third visit to Delhi rather than a first.

Okhla Bird Sanctuary

Four square kilometres of wetland where the Yamuna enters Noida, and one of the best birding sites in the National Capital Region — over three hundred species recorded, about half of them migratory.

Winter is the season. Painted storks nest in noisy colonies, white ibis, spot-billed duck, northern shoveler, bar-headed geese that cross the Himalaya to get here, and greater flamingo in some years. Early morning is the hour; by eleven the light is flat and the birds have settled.

There is a walkway along the barrage and a boat when the water and the season allow.

ISKCON Noida

The Hare Krishna temple, with an afternoon aarti — singing, drums and kirtan, which visitors are welcome to sit in on or join. The prasadam afterwards is free and generous.

It is a modern, loud, participatory kind of worship, and it is a useful contrast to the silence of the older Delhi monuments.

Akshardham

Day two, and the largest Hindu temple complex of its kind — completed in 2005, in Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble, with 234 carved pillars, 148 stone elephants, and no steel or concrete in the main structure, built by traditional shilpa methods.

The evening musical fountain show runs on the step-well plaza after dark, and the boat ride through a reconstruction of ten thousand years of Indian history is either charming or strange depending on your temperament.

Read this before you go: phones, cameras, bags, belts and anything electronic are prohibited inside, with no exceptions and airport-grade security. There are free lockers at the gate. Closed Mondays.
