Old Delhi's food is the reason people who live here come back to it. The shops are narrow, several are older than most countries, and nearly all of them make one thing only and have done for generations.
What you are likely to eat
Parathas in Paranthe Wali Gali, a lane that has sold nothing else since the 1870s, fried in ghee and served with four chutneys. Daulat ki chaat, which exists only in winter and only in Old Delhi: milk foam whipped overnight in the open air, collected at dawn, gone by noon. Kebabs around Jama Masjid, cooked over coals on the street. Chaat in its proper form — papdi, aloo tikki, dahi bhalla. Jalebi from a shop that has been frying it in the same spot since 1884. Kulfi from Kuremal, where they freeze it inside a hollowed-out mango.
And a rickshaw ride through the lanes, which is the only way through them since cars cannot enter.
