Detailed Itinerary

Morning Pickup and Introduction to Delhi

Your day begins with a comfortable pickup at 8:00 AM from your accommodation in Delhi, after you have enjoyed breakfast. You will be chauffeured in an air-conditioned car, perfectly suited to navigate the bustling streets of Old and New Delhi while offering respite from the city’s heat. As your local expert guide joins you, get ready to dive into the rich tapestry of Delhi’s history, culture, and architecture, blending Mughal grandeur with modern vibrancy.

Exploring Jama Masjid: The Heart of Old Delhi

Your first stop is the majestic Jama Masjid, officially known as Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa. Built between 1644 and 1656 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, this mosque is one of the largest in India and a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. As you stand in the sprawling courtyard, imagine the imperial processions and religious gatherings that once animated this space. The mosque’s striking red sandstone and white marble façade, intricate calligraphy, and towering minarets will leave you in awe. Remember to wear long clothes as a mark of respect when visiting this sacred site. Your guide will share stories about the mosque’s political and cultural significance, from the days of the Mughal empire to its role during British rule.

Wandering Through Chandni Chowk: The Soul of Old Delhi

Next, you’ll stroll through Chandni Chowk, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi. This vibrant street market was once divided by canals that reflected the moonlight, giving the area its poetic name meaning “Moonlight Square.” Although the canals are no longer visible, the market’s energy remains palpable. You’ll weave through narrow lanes filled with shops selling spices, textiles, jewelry, and street food. The sounds of bargaining vendors, the aroma of traditional sweets, and the colorful displays will immerse you in everyday Delhi life. Close by, you’ll catch a glimpse of the imposing Red Fort, built by Shah Jahan in 1650 and designed by his daughter Jahanara—a symbol of Mughal power that once dominated the city skyline.

Lunch at a Local Restaurant

After the morning’s explorations, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant offering authentic Delhi cuisine. This meal will be a chance to savor flavors that have been perfected over centuries. Expect fragrant biryanis, rich curries, and fresh breads paired with cooling yogurts and chutneys. Your guide will be happy to recommend dishes based on your preferences, ensuring an authentic taste of Delhi’s culinary heritage.

Optional Visit to the Red Fort and New Delhi Drive

Post lunch, you have the option to explore the Red Fort more closely. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of India’s struggle for independence. Wander through its massive gates, exquisite palaces, and serene gardens while your guide recounts tales of Mughal royalty and historic events.

Later, your journey continues through New Delhi, the imperial city designed by British architects in the early 20th century. You’ll drive past important landmarks such as India Gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace), the Parliament House, Lotus Temple, Humayun Tomb, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib witnessing the blend of Mughal, colonial and modern architecture that defines this part of the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

The private half-day tour of Old and New Delhi covers the most essential highlights of each area in approximately 4–5 hours: Old Delhi — Jama Masjid (India's largest mosque, exterior and courtyard), the Chandni Chowk bazaar (cycle-rickshaw ride through the historic lanes), and a glimpse of the Red Fort exterior and forecourt; New Delhi — India Gate (the iconic 1931 Raj-era war memorial), Humayun's Tomb (UNESCO Heritage, 1570, architectural predecessor to the Taj Mahal), and Qutub Minar (UNESCO Heritage, 12th century). The half-day format prioritizes the most significant sites over comprehensive coverage, making it ideal for visitors with limited time in Delhi.
Yes — this is a 100% private half-day tour. Your Ministry of Tourism-licensed guide and private air-conditioned vehicle are exclusively assigned to your group for the entire duration. No other visitors share the vehicle, the guide, or the itinerary. This private format ensures the guide's full attention, your preferred pace, and complete schedule flexibility — even on a half-day tour. If you want to spend 45 minutes at Humayun's Tomb instead of the standard 30, the guide adapts without compromising the remaining itinerary.
The private half-day Delhi tour runs approximately 4–5 hours from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off. Morning tours (8:30 AM–1:00–1:30 PM) cover Old Delhi in the cooler morning and New Delhi sites in the late morning. Afternoon tours (2:00 PM–6:30–7:00 PM) cover New Delhi sites in good afternoon light, with Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar looking excellent in warm late-afternoon sunlight. A full-day tour (9 hours) allows more comprehensive coverage of both areas — if your schedule permits, the full-day version is recommended for first-time Delhi visitors who want thorough coverage.
Yes — a cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk's historic bazaar lanes is included in the half-day tour and is one of the most vivid urban experiences in India. Even in a 25–30 minute ride, you see the specialized trade lanes (jewellery, textiles, spices, sweets), the 17th-century Mughal street layout designed by Shah Jahan's daughter, and the extraordinary sensory environment of one of Asia's oldest commercial districts. The guide accompanies the rickshaw (either riding alongside or walking) and provides commentary on the specific lane, vendor, and historical context of what you are passing.
Yes — monument entry tickets are included for the sites that require them: Red Fort exterior viewing area (₹600 if entering the fort complex), Humayun's Tomb (₹600 for foreign nationals), and Qutub Minar (₹600 for foreign nationals). Jama Masjid main courtyard has no mandatory entry fee. India Gate is free. The Chandni Chowk rickshaw area is a public space. Total included ticket value for a foreign national visiting Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar: ₹1,200. Children under 15 enter all ASI monuments for free.
Yes — the private half-day Delhi tour is specifically ideal for transit passengers with a long Delhi layover. With 5–7+ hours between flights, a half-day tour allows you to cover Delhi's most significant monuments and one of Asia's most atmospheric bazaars before returning to the airport. The private vehicle means you can request drop-off directly at the airport (Terminal 2 domestic or Terminal 3 international) at the end of the tour. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is approximately 45 minutes from central Delhi's monument areas. The guide can advise on the latest hotel pickup time based on your flight departure.
Morning (8:30 AM–1:00 PM) is recommended for the Old Delhi section first — Chandni Chowk and the Jama Masjid area are most energetic in the morning. Afternoon (2:00–7:00 PM) suits visitors who prefer more time for lunch before starting. For photography: morning light is excellent for the Chandni Chowk lanes; afternoon-to-sunset light is excellent for Humayun's Tomb (warm golden tones on the red sandstone facade) and Qutub Minar. Avoid midday (11 AM–1 PM) for outdoor sightseeing in summer months — temperatures peak. The guide selects the optimal sequence within your chosen time window.
Yes — extending from a half-day to a full-day Delhi tour adds comprehensive coverage of the remaining sites: Khari Baoli (Asia's largest spice wholesale market), Lodi Garden (Mughal and pre-Mughal tombs in a beautiful park), Hauz Khas village (medieval water reservoir with contemporary cafes), and optionally the Lotus Temple or Akshardham Temple. The full-day tour (9–10 hours) provides the most complete Delhi experience possible in a single day. If you have the time available, the full day is highly recommended — Delhi's historical depth rewards more time rather than less.
