Full description

Old Delhi on foot, with a woman leading.

Old Delhi is the part of the city most visitors are warned about and most regret skipping. It is dense, loud, and the lanes have not changed width since Shah Jahan laid them out. Walking it with a guide who knows which turn to take, and who is a woman, changes the experience considerably for a lot of travellers.

Where you go

The Jain temple at the top of Chandni Chowk, the oldest in Delhi, which runs a bird hospital next door that treats thousands of birds a year and asks nothing for it.

A Sikh gurdwara, where the langar kitchen feeds anyone who comes, every day, free, and where you will be welcome to see how that is run.

Chandni Chowk itself: the silver market, the wedding lanes of Kinari Bazaar, the spice market at Khari Baoli which is Asia's largest and will make you cough the moment you climb to the rooftop above it.

And food, chosen by someone who eats here: parathas from the lane that does nothing else, jalebi from a shop older than most countries, chaat, and kulfi.

Included

Heritage walk with a female guide, visits to the Jain temple, the gurdwara, Chandni Chowk and the spice market, and food tastings throughout.

Worth knowing

Heads must be covered in the gurdwara and shoes come off at both religious sites. Scarves are provided.
Khari Baoli will make you cough. The chilli dust in the air is not a metaphor. It is also the best part.
Come hungry; there is more food than people expect.
Three hours of walking on uneven, crowded lanes. Comfortable shoes, and keep your bag in front of you.
Most of Chandni Chowk closes on Sundays.
