Agra from Jaipur without moving hotels

Jaipur to Agra is 240 km, four to five hours on reasonable road through Bharatpur. A day trip works, and it suits travellers based in Jaipur who do not want to pack up for one monument.

There is also an Agra-start option if you are already there.

The drive

Early pickup in a private air-conditioned car. Fatehpur Sikri sits on this route and can be added if the timing allows — Akbar's capital of 1571, abandoned fourteen years later when its water failed and standing complete because of it.

Taj Mahal

A licensed guide meets you in Agra.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan — the same quarries that supplied the marble on half the buildings you saw in Jaipur.

What a guide adds: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in progressively larger letters so it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where one flower can hold sixty separate stones; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; the illusion at the gateway, where the building seems to shrink as you approach it.

And the single asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored building: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-centre by Aurangzeb after his death.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years, the Taj visible along the river.

Practical

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entry is ₹1,300 a head for a foreign adult with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort.
