Detailed Itinerary

Delhi Layover private tour

Arrival and Pickup at New Delhi Airport

Upon your arrival at New Delhi Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your personal local guide and chauffeured in a comfortable car. Whether your layover is early morning or late afternoon, this private tour is fully customizable to fit your flight schedule, ensuring a stress-free and efficient exploration of the city. Prepare for a day filled with rich history, vibrant culture, and iconic landmarks, all without the hassle of long queues thanks to skip-the-line entry privileges.

Exploring the Iconic India Gate and Surroundings

Your first stop will be the majestic India Gate, a war memorial that stands proudly in the heart of New Delhi. Built in the 1930s to honor the Indian soldiers who lost their lives during World War I, the 42-meter high arch is surrounded by lush gardens and buzzing local activity. You’ll have time to stroll around, take photographs, and soak in the patriotic atmosphere. The area is an excellent place to learn about India’s colonial past and post-independence identity from your knowledgeable guide, who will share fascinating stories and historical insights.

Discovering Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb: UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Next on your itinerary are two of Delhi’s most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites, each a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. First, you will visit Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world, standing at 73 meters tall. As you admire the intricate carvings and ancient ruins that surround the tower, your guide will narrate the history of the Qutub complex, including its construction in the early 13th century and its significance in establishing Muslim rule in India.

Afterwards, you will head to Humayun’s Tomb, the grand mausoleum of the Mughal Emperor Humayun. This stunning garden tomb is renowned for its Persian-inspired architecture and beautifully landscaped Charbagh gardens. Walking through its serene courtyards, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Mughal art and the architectural innovations that inspired the later Taj Mahal.

Immersing Yourself in Old Delhi’s Vibrant Heart: Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk Bazaar

Your journey continues to the bustling lanes of Old Delhi, where history and daily life pulse through narrow streets and vibrant bazaars. You will visit Jama Masjid, one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in India, constructed in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan. Climbing its minarets offers panoramic views of the sprawling city below, a perfect photo opportunity.

From there, you will delve into the sensory overload of Chandni Chowk Bazaar. This historic marketplace has been the commercial heartbeat of Delhi for centuries. As you wander its labyrinthine alleys, you’ll encounter colorful shops selling spices, textiles, jewelry, and street food stalls offering authentic local flavors. Your guide will help you navigate this lively area, pointing out hidden gems and explaining the cultural significance of the sights and smells around you.

Lunch and Practical Tips for Your Day

Around midday, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at a carefully selected local restaurant where you can savor authentic Indian cuisine. Whether you prefer mild or spicy dishes, vegetarian or meat options, your guide will tailor the meal to your tastes, giving you a true taste of Delhi’s culinary diversity.

For your comfort throughout the day, we recommend wearing light, breathable clothing and comfortable walking shoes, as you will be exploring both outdoor sites and busy market streets. Carry your passport with you as it may be required for entry at some locations or for identification during the tour. Don’t forget your camera, sunscreen, and a hat to protect against the sun.

We had a nine-hour layover en route to Bangkok and this turned dead time into the best part of our trip. The driver was waiting at arrivals with our name on a sign, and having the air-conditioned car in that July heat was a lifesaver. Our guide walked us around India Gate and told us the stories behind everything. Back at departures with plenty of time to spare.

Faultless organisation for a transit visit. I was nervous about clearing immigration and making my onward flight, but the guide kept an eye on the clock the whole day and reassured me constantly. Loved seeing the government buildings along Rajpath and a proper Old Delhi bazaar. Cold water bottles kept appearing. Genuinely felt like a private day out, not a rushed airport tour.

Booked this on a whim during a long stopover and so glad I did. Everything private, everything smooth, no hidden costs beyond the few monument tickets we chose to buy. The guide adjusted the route when he saw traffic building so we would not miss our flight. India Gate at late afternoon was beautiful. Worth every dollar of the seventy.

A brilliant way to see Delhi without leaving luggage worries behind, and the guide was warm and knowledgeable. My only note is that six hours goes fast, so the Old Delhi bazaar stop felt a little rushed and I would have loved more browsing time. Still, the AC car and door-to-door service made it stress-free. Great value for a layover.

Our chauffeur spoke excellent English and navigated the chaos of Delhi traffic like a pro. What impressed me most was the flexibility, we swapped one stop for a market and nobody batted an eye. The kids stayed happy because we kept ducking back into the cool car between sights. Picked up and dropped exactly on our flight schedule. Highly recommend for families in transit.

January mornings in Delhi were colder than expected but the car was comfortable and the guide had thought of everything. He knew the quietest moments to photograph India Gate and helped me haggle for a scarf in the bazaar. For a private guide, car and taxes all in, seventy dollars felt like a steal. Made my long stopover genuinely memorable.

Solid layover tour and the guide clearly knew his history. Honest heads up, the spring afternoon heat was intense and the traffic between New and Old Delhi ate into our time more than I expected, so a couple of stops were quick. That said, the driver got us back to departures with a comfortable buffer and never once seemed flustered. Would book again.

Exactly what a transit tour should be. Met at arrivals, whisked off in a spotless AC car, and treated to a thoughtful loop of monuments, government buildings and a buzzing market. The guide was patient with all my questions and never made us feel rushed despite the clock. Constant supply of water in that heat was a small touch that meant a lot. Superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. This is a dedicated airport-to-airport layover tour, so your driver and licensed guide meet you right at the arrivals area of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) and drop you back at departures when you're done. Pickup and drop-off can also be arranged from a Delhi hotel if you're stopping over overnight. Just share your flight details when booking so timings line up with your schedule.
The tour runs for 6 hours, which comfortably covers the highlights of both New and Old Delhi, including India Gate, the government buildings along Rajpath, heritage monuments and a bustling bazaar. It's fast-paced but relaxed, spending time on the iconic sights rather than trying to cram in everything. If you have a full free day rather than a layover, the Delhi Full Day Guided Tour covers more ground at a gentler pace.
The Airport To Airport Layover City Tour is $70 and covers a private air-conditioned car with chauffeur, an official tour guide, all parking and taxes, and bottled water. Monument entry tickets are not listed as included, so budget a little extra cash for any sites you choose to enter. There are no hidden group fees since the whole car is yours.
It's fully private. The air-conditioned car, chauffeur and licensed guide are exclusively for you and your travel party, so you set the pace and can skip or linger at sites as you like. This is ideal for transit travelers who don't want the unpredictability of a shared coach. For a more upmarket vehicle, see the luxury car Old & New Delhi tour.
We recommend a layover of at least 8 to 9 hours so there's a comfortable buffer for the 6-hour tour plus immigration, traffic and getting back through security. Your guide keeps a close eye on the clock and Delhi traffic to make sure you're back at departures with time to spare. Share both your arrival and departure times at booking and we'll tailor the route accordingly.
Yes, to step outside the airport you'll need a valid Indian entry visa or eligible e-Visa and must clear immigration. A transit-only stay inside the terminal does not allow you to join the tour. Please check your visa status before booking, as we cannot pick you up landside without it. If you're unsure, confirm requirements with your airline or the nearest Indian mission.
The listed price covers the car, guide, water, parking and taxes, but monument entrance fees are not included. Much of the tour focuses on sites you can enjoy from outside, like India Gate and the government buildings, so you can keep costs low. If you'd like to enter ticketed monuments, your guide will help you buy tickets on the day; carry some rupees or a card.
Delhi summers (April to June) are genuinely hot, often above 40C/104F, so wear light breathable clothing, a hat and sunglasses, and use the bottled water provided. The car is air-conditioned, which makes a big difference between stops. Winter (December to January) can be surprisingly chilly in the mornings, so bring a layer. For any monument or place of worship, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is best.
Yes. Because it's private and car-based, it works well for families with children and older travelers, with plenty of time in the cool car between stops and no rigid group schedule. The walking is light and you can shorten stops if anyone tires. Let us know if you're traveling with young kids so the driver can plan rest and restroom breaks.
The pace is easy. Most of the day is spent driving between sights in the comfortable car, with short walks on mostly flat ground at India Gate and around the bazaars. There are no major climbs. Wear comfortable closed shoes, as Old Delhi's market lanes can be uneven and crowded.
Absolutely. The route can include one of Old Delhi's lively bazaars, and your guide can point you toward good spots and help with a bit of friendly bargaining. Keep in mind the 6-hour window, so shopping time is limited on a layover. If browsing markets is your priority, a dedicated guided shopping tour with a local expert gives you far more time to hunt for treasures.
Yes. Traveling with a licensed guide and a private chauffeur is one of the safest and most comfortable ways to see Delhi in a short window, as they handle navigation, parking, traffic and any language barriers. You'll always have someone looking out for you and keeping the day on schedule. Keep an eye on your valuables in crowded market areas, as you would anywhere.
Yes, the tour includes an English-speaking chauffeur and an official, licensed tour guide who shares the history and stories behind each site. This makes the experience far richer than a simple taxi transfer. If you need a guide in another language, let us know at booking and we'll do our best to arrange it.
Definitely. India Gate, the government buildings along Rajpath and the colorful Old Delhi bazaars are wonderful for photography, and your guide will know the best angles and quieter moments to shoot. Some monument interiors charge a small camera fee or restrict photography, which your guide will flag. There's no rush, so you'll have time for that perfect layover snapshot.
If your inbound flight is delayed, we track your arrival and adjust the meeting time where possible, so please share your flight number. If you find you have a full day or want to venture further, popular add-on options include a same-day trip to the Taj Mahal by car or a faster Taj Mahal tour by Gatimaan Express train from Delhi.
Simply book online and provide your arrival and departure flight details along with the number of travelers so we can match the timing to your layover. You'll receive confirmation with your meeting point at the airport arrivals area and a contact for the day. We recommend booking in advance, especially during the busy October to March season, to secure your guide and car.
