Two days, and the Taj at sunrise without a 3am departure.
The sunrise Taj from Delhi as a day trip means leaving in the small hours. Staying the night in Agra removes that, and gives Delhi its own proper day rather than a drive-past.
Day one — Delhi
Qutub Minar and the iron pillar. Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb the Taj was modelled on, which is worth seeing the day before the Taj itself — the lineage is obvious once you have stood in both. Old Delhi for the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk. Then the drive to Agra and an overnight stay.
Day two — Agra
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, from a hotel twenty minutes away rather than three hours. The gate opens about half an hour before dawn and the first batch has the complex nearly to itself.
Agra Fort after breakfast, where the Musamman Burj looks across the Yamuna at the tomb. Then back to Delhi.
