The first hour at the Taj, with the tickets already bought.
The Taj at opening and the Taj at eleven are different buildings. At dawn the complex holds a few hundred people rather than several thousand, the marble is cool enough to stand on, and the stone runs grey to pink to white as the sun comes up behind the dome.
Entry fees are included here rather than sold as an add-on, so there is nothing to settle at the gate.
How the day runs
Airport or hotel pickup in Delhi in the small hours, then the Yamuna Expressway down to Agra, roughly three hours, timed to reach the gate before it opens.
Your private guide takes you through the Great Gate approach where the dome appears framed in the arch, the charbagh gardens, the marble platform, and the mausoleum interior with its cenotaphs and pierced screens. The pietra dura inlay gets explained properly — semi-precious stone set into marble, with jasper from the Punjab, jade from China and lapis from Afghanistan.
Agra Fort follows, where the Musamman Burj looks across the Yamuna at the tomb Shah Jahan built and was later confined in sight of. Then the drive back. About eleven hours.

Sunrise moves through the year, roughly 6:45 in late December and 5:15 in June, so pickup shifts with the season. We confirm yours at booking.
From November to February, river fog can hide the dome for the first hour before lifting. It makes unusual photographs while it lasts, but if a clear sunrise matters, avoid late December and January.
