Two days, and only 100 minutes of it travelling each way.
The superfast service covers Delhi to Agra in about an hour and forty minutes, against three hours by road on a good day. Over a two-day trip that difference is most of an afternoon, and it is the reason this itinerary fits three sites comfortably where a road version fits two.
Day one
Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi for the morning train. A private air-conditioned car and your guide meet you at Agra Cantt. Agra Fort in the afternoon, then the Taj Mahal in evening light when the marble runs warm. Check in for the night.
Day two
Back at the Taj for sunrise, which is a genuinely different building from the one you saw the previous afternoon: a fraction of the crowd, cool air, and the stone shifting grey to pink to white. After breakfast, Fatehpur Sikri or Itimad-ud-Daulah depending on your option, then the return train.
