Two days, and the sunrise Taj without a 3am departure.
The sunrise Taj as a day trip from Delhi means leaving in the small hours. Staying the night in Agra removes that entirely, and gives Delhi its own proper day rather than a drive through it.
Day one — Delhi
Qutub Minar, begun in 1192, with the iron pillar beside it that has stood in the open for sixteen centuries without rusting. Humayun's Tomb, the first Mughal garden tomb and the direct model for the Taj — worth seeing the day before the Taj itself, because the lineage becomes obvious once you have stood in both. Old Delhi for the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk. India Gate and the colonial avenues.
Then the drive to Agra and an overnight stay.
Day two — Agra
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, from a hotel twenty minutes away. The complex is at its emptiest and the marble runs grey to pink to white as the sun comes up behind it.
Agra Fort after breakfast, where the Musamman Burj looks across the Yamuna at the tomb. Then back to Delhi.

The Taj is closed on Fridays, the Red Fort on Mondays. Both fall on this itinerary, so send your dates and we arrange the order.
Sunrise entry means leaving the Agra hotel around 5:30. It is the best part of the trip.
Winter fog can obscure the dome for the first hour from November to February.
