Delhi deserves a day of its own.
Most visitors treat Delhi as the airport they fly into on the way to Agra. It holds three UNESCO World Heritage Sites of its own, eight centuries of successive capitals, and a food culture the rest of north India borrows from. This itinerary gives it a full day before heading south.
Day one — Delhi
Qutub Minar, the 72-metre minaret begun in 1192, and the iron pillar beside it that has stood in the open for sixteen centuries without rusting. Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb that was the direct prototype for the Taj Mahal, built by a Persian architect for a Mughal emperor's widow. Old Delhi for the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, and the lanes of Chandni Chowk. Then India Gate and the colonial avenues of Lutyens' Delhi.
Day two — Agra
Early drive down the Yamuna Expressway. The Taj Mahal with your guide, then Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years imprisoned by his son within sight of the tomb he built. Return to Delhi in the evening.
Seeing Humayun's Tomb the day before the Taj is the right order. The lineage is obvious once you have stood in both.
