Three sites, one night, no rushing.
Fatehpur Sikri is the casualty of every same-day Agra trip. It sits 40 km west of the city, which is an hour each way you simply do not have if you are also driving back to Delhi. Staying the night solves it.
Day one
Pickup from your hotel or the airport in Delhi, private air-conditioned car down the Yamuna Expressway. Agra Fort in the afternoon, then the Taj Mahal in the evening light. Check in to your hotel.
Day two
The Taj at sunrise if you want it, then west to Fatehpur Sikri. Akbar built this capital in red sandstone from 1571 and abandoned it within about fifteen years, most probably because the water failed. The Buland Darwaza at 54 metres, the Panch Mahal's five open storeys, and the marble dargah of Salim Chishti where women still tie threads to the screens are all intact, and there is rarely a crowd. Then the drive back to Delhi.

Worth knowing
The Taj is closed on Fridays. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort are open daily, so a Friday arrival still works if you plan the Taj for day two.

Fatehpur Sikri has a short shuttle from the car park and a great deal of open stone with little shade.
