Delhi, the Taj, and the Ganges at dawn.
Four days linking three places that are each unlike the others, with the long legs done by train rather than road — which on the Agra to Varanasi stretch is the difference between a day of driving and a night's sleep.
Delhi
The capital's own layers: Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, India Gate and the colonial avenues.
Agra
The Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with the Musamman Burj view across the river that gives Shah Jahan's story its ending.
Varanasi
The oldest continuously inhabited city in India, and nothing on the route prepares you for it. The sunrise boat ride along the ghats is included, and it is the right way to see the city wake: bathers, priests, laundry, cremation smoke, all at once and without ceremony. In the evening the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws several thousand people to watch fire offerings made to the river.

The sunrise boat leaves before dawn, around 5:30. It is the best hour on the river.
