Jaipur en un día desde Delhi, por carretera

270 km en cada dirección por la NH-48, cuatro a cinco horas en cada sentido con una parada. Un inicio temprano es lo que lo hace posible, la autopista está vacía antes de las siete y Gurugram no lo está después de las ocho.

Fuerte de Amber

La primera parada, y la correcta: está a once kilómetros de la ciudad y es el último lugar donde uno quiere estar a media tarde.

Iniciado en 1592 por Raja Man Singh, general de Akbar, sobre una cresta encima del lago Maota, razón por la que un fuerte rajput lleva incrustaciones mogolas y planificación de jardín persa.

La puerta pintada de Ganesh Pol, con una galería enrejada encima desde la que las mujeres de la corte observaban las llegadas sin ser vistas. El Sheesh Mahal, decorado con miles de fragmentos de espejo convexo de forma que una vela se leía como un techo lleno de estrellas. El Sukh Niwas, enfriado por agua que corría por canales tallados en el mármol.

El patio del zenana albergaba doce apartamentos de reinas, dispuestos de forma que ninguno daba a otro.

Hawa Mahal

El Palacio de los Vientos: 953 ventanas en cinco pisos, y apenas un metro de profundidad en la mayor parte de su altura. Construido en 1799 para que las mujeres de la corte pudieran observar las procesiones de la calle sin ser vistas desde la vía, con una celosía que acelera el flujo de aire y enfría los corredores de detrás.

City Palace

Iniciado en 1729 en el centro de la nueva ciudad, y en parte todavía residencia de la familia real. El arsenal, las galerías textiles, y las dos urnas de plata en el Diwan-i-Khas, los objetos de plata más grandes del mundo, fundidas para que un maharajá pudiera llevar agua del Ganges a Inglaterra.

Jal Mahal
