Detailed Itinerary

Departure from Delhi: Gatimaan Express Train to Agra

Your unforgettable 2-day Taj Mahal overnight tour begins early in the morning at the New Delhi Railway Station. You'll board the Gatimaan Express, India's fastest train, which promises a comfortable and swift journey to Agra Cantt station. The train takes just 90 minutes, departing Delhi at around 8:00 am and arriving in Agra at approximately 10:00 am. During this time, you can relax, enjoy the scenic countryside rolling past your window, and prepare for the cultural immersion ahead. Be sure to dress comfortably for the day ahead and bring sunscreen as you’ll be spending a lot of time outdoors.

Morning Exploration: Agra Fort and Lunch Break

Once you arrive in Agra, your local guide will accompany you to the majestic Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site that embodies Mughal grandeur. Built in red sandstone, this sprawling fortress was the seat of the Mughal Empire before the Taj Mahal was constructed. You'll wander through its imposing gates, intricate palaces, and beautiful courtyards, gaining insight into the rich history and architecture that shaped the region. Following your visit, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, savoring authentic Mughlai cuisine and replenishing your energy for the afternoon.

Sunset Experience: Mehtab Bagh and the Taj Mahal

After lunch, you will have some free time before heading to Mehtab Bagh, a tranquil garden complex located just across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal. This vantage point offers a stunning and lesser-known perspective of the Taj Mahal, especially as the sun begins to set. The warm, golden hues of sunset cast a magical glow on the marble mausoleum, creating a perfect opportunity for photography and quiet reflection. Watching the Taj Mahal bathed in the soft light of dusk is an experience few travelers get to enjoy, making your visit truly special. You will then check into your hotel in Agra for an overnight stay, allowing you to rest well for an early start the next day.

Sunrise Visit: The Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri

Next Day : The highlight of your tour awaits early the next morning. You'll rise before dawn to visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the monument is at its most serene and breathtaking. The cool morning air and soft pink light enhance the ethereal beauty of this symbol of eternal love. Your guide will share fascinating stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, the couple whose love inspired this masterpiece. After soaking in the tranquility and taking ample photographs, you will set off for Fatehpur Sikri, located about 40 kilometers from Agra.

Fatehpur Sikri, another UNESCO World Heritage site, was the capital of the Mughal Empire for a brief period. This ghost city is a treasure trove of architectural marvels including the Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, and the serene tomb of Salim Chishti. Exploring Fatehpur Sikri offers a glimpse into Mughal life and religious harmony during the 16th century. Walking through the red sandstone buildings under the bright morning sun, you’ll feel transported back in time.

Return to Agra: Enjoy Agra City Tour and Gatimaan Express

After your Fatehpur Sikri tour, you will return to Agra for lunch and a short city tour. This is a great opportunity to explore local markets, pick up souvenirs, or simply stroll through the bustling streets to experience the vibrant culture of Agra. Your guide will tailor this time to your interests, and optional visits can be arranged upon request.

In the evening, you will board the Gatimaan Express once again at approximately 5:45 pm for Delhi

The Gatimaan Express was such a smooth way to reach Agra, far better than sitting in Delhi traffic for hours. Splitting the Taj over two days meant we caught the sunset from Mehtab Bagh and then sunrise the next morning, both breathtaking in totally different ways. Our guide was patient and full of Mughal history. The overnight stay made everything feel unhurried.

Fatehpur Sikri was the surprise of the trip for me. Most day tours skip it, but here we had a full morning to explore the Buland Darwaza and the abandoned palaces with no rush. The private Toyota and the golf carts saved our legs after a lot of walking. Booked the EC class train seats and they were worth the small extra cost.

As a family of four we really appreciated the two-day pace. The kids managed the early sunrise start better than expected, and seeing the marble change colour at the Taj was magical. Agra Fort and the Baby Taj were quieter than the main monument. The guide arranged our shoe covers and water without us having to ask for anything.

A very well organised tour and the express train is genuinely fast and comfortable. My only note is that the sunrise wake-up is brutally early, so go to bed sensibly the night before. Also there were a few persistent souvenir sellers near the Taj gates, though our guide handled them well. Overall the sunset then sunrise combination is unbeatable and I'd recommend it.

We travelled in late November and the weather was perfect, crisp mornings and clear skies for photos. The view of the Taj across the Yamuna at sunset from Mehtab Bagh was something I'll never forget. Having our own guide for both days meant we could linger where we wanted. The return train got us back to Delhi relaxed and on time.

Doing Agra over two days instead of cramming it into one made all the difference. Sunset at the Taj, a comfortable hotel night, then straight through the gates at sunrise while it was still quiet. Itmad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj, was a hidden gem with beautiful inlay work. Great value considering the train tickets, car and guide are all bundled in.

Loved the itinerary and the Gatimaan Express was a highlight in itself. Do be prepared for a lot of walking on uneven stone at Agra Fort and especially Fatehpur Sikri, and by midday in March it was already quite hot. Wear proper shoes. That said, our guide was excellent and the sunrise at the Taj Mahal completely lived up to the hype.

This was the smoothest India experience we could have hoped for. From Hazrat Nizamuddin station to the return leg, everything ran on schedule. The guide knew exactly which corners of the Taj were best for photos before the crowds arrived. Golf carts to the monuments were a nice touch in the heat. Booking the whole thing as one package took all the stress out.

Frequently Asked Questions

You travel both ways on the Gatimaan Express, India's fastest train. The outbound journey departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi, and on day two you return comfortably from Agra to Delhi in the evening on the same express service. Your train tickets in both directions are included in the price.
The $140 option includes Gatimaan Express tickets in Chair Car (CC) class, while the $158 option upgrades you to Executive Chair (EC) class for a more spacious, premium seat. Both cover the identical two-day itinerary, guide, car, and sightseeing, so the choice comes down purely to your preferred level of train comfort.
Yes, and this is the highlight of the two-day format. On your first evening you view the Taj Mahal at sunset from across the Yamuna River at Mehtab Bagh, a quieter and less crowded vantage point. The next morning you enter the monument itself for the famous sunrise visit, when the marble glows and the crowds are thinnest.
Over two days you visit the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah (the Baby Taj), Mehtab Bagh for the sunset view, and Fatehpur Sikri, the magnificent abandoned Mughal capital. This is far more comprehensive than a same-day trip, which is why the overnight format works so well. If you only have one day, consider the Agra same-day Taj Mahal tour by Gatimaan train instead.
The listing price covers your train tickets, private Toyota car, government-approved guide for both days, golf cart rides, water and shoe covers. Monument entrance fees for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Baby Taj and Fatehpur Sikri are typically paid locally or added separately — please confirm the exact inclusions with us at the time of booking so there are no surprises at the gate.
The tour includes an overnight stay in Agra between the two days of sightseeing. Room category and specific hotel can vary, so we recommend confirming the accommodation details and any board (breakfast) arrangements with us when you book. If you'd prefer a shorter one-night structure, you might also look at the Agra overnight tour one-night experience.
Expect a fair amount of walking on uneven stone, ramps and steps, particularly at Agra Fort and across the hilltop complex of Fatehpur Sikri. A golf cart is provided for the approach to the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Mehtab Bagh, which reduces the distance considerably. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are essential.
Yes. The private car, included golf carts and the relaxed two-day pace make it comfortable for families and seniors, avoiding the exhausting single-day dash from Delhi. The early sunrise start at the Taj Mahal does mean a pre-dawn wake-up, so pace yourself the evening before. There are stairs at Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri to be aware of for anyone with limited mobility.
October to March offers the most pleasant weather for this tour, with cool, clear mornings ideal for the sunrise viewing. Summer months (April to June) can be extremely hot, so light breathable clothing, a hat and sunscreen are important. As the Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri are important heritage and religious sites, modest dress covering shoulders and knees is respectful and advisable.
Absolutely — sunrise at the Taj Mahal and the sunset view from Mehtab Bagh are among the most photogenic moments in all of India. Your guide knows the best angles and quieter spots for photos. Note that tripods and photography inside the main Taj mausoleum chamber are restricted, and there may be a small camera fee at some sites.
The Agra sightseeing is private: you have your own Toyota car and dedicated government-approved guide for both days. The train journeys on the Gatimaan Express are in a shared carriage in your booked CC or EC class. This blend gives you personal, flexible sightseeing while enjoying the speed and comfort of India's fastest train.
Fatehpur Sikri is a stunning red sandstone city built by Emperor Akbar and later abandoned, located about 40 km from Agra. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Buland Darwaza, palaces and courtyards, and is often missed on rushed day trips. Its inclusion on day two is one of the biggest advantages of this two-day overnight itinerary.
You'll board the early Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin on the morning of day one, and return to Delhi on the express in the evening of day two. Exact train timings vary by date, so we confirm your precise departure and reporting times after booking. Please plan any onward Delhi arrangements or flights on day two for late evening or the following day.
This tour focuses purely on Delhi to Agra, giving deep coverage of Agra and Fatehpur Sikri over two days without adding Jaipur. If you want to extend into Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle 3-day tour or the longer 6-day Golden Triangle tour add Jaipur's forts and palaces to the itinerary.
Simply select your preferred CC ($140) or EC ($158) train class and complete your booking online; we then confirm your Gatimaan Express seats, guide and hotel by email. Because train tickets are reserved in advance, we advise booking early, especially in peak season. Please contact us for the current cancellation terms, as train reservations can carry date-specific conditions.
Gatimaan Express Train Tickets CC Class or EC Class (As per your selected tour option) Train Tickets Delhi Agra and next day Agra to Delhi. Yes, the Taj Mahal is strictly closed to the general public every Friday for religious prayers at the mosque within the complex. Plan your Agra itinerary accordingly. On Fridays, we recommend visiting Agra Fort, Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), or Mehtab Bagh for a stunning sunset view of the Taj.
Yes, foreign tourists must carry their original physical passport for identification at the Taj Mahal entrance gates. Digital copies or photocopies are not accepted by CISF security. Sunrise is the most magical time — the marble glows golden in the early light and crowds are minimal. Gates open 30 minutes before sunrise. See our opening time guide for seasonal timings. Sunset from Mehtab Bagh is a stunning alternative if you prefer a more relaxed viewing experience.
Peak season (October–March) sees heavy tourist footfall, especially on weekends and holidays. Early morning visits (before 8 AM) are essential to avoid congestion. Our licensed guides know the optimal routes and timing to navigate crowds efficiently. Consider weekday visits for a significantly quieter experience.
Absolutely! The Golden Triangle (Delhi → Agra → Jaipur) is India's most popular tourist circuit. From Agra, Jaipur is approximately 4 hours by expressway. We offer multi-day Golden Triangle packages as well as same-day trips from Delhi to Agra that can be combined with a Jaipur extension.
Delhi's top heritage sites include the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, India Gate, and the bustling lanes of Old Delhi. See our things to do in Delhi guide for a comprehensive list with insider tips from local guides.
We recommend 2–3 days to cover Delhi's major highlights comfortably. Use our Delhi 1-day itinerary if you're short on time. Many travelers combine Delhi with a day trip to Agra for the Taj Mahal and then continue to Jaipur for the Golden Triangle circuit.
Delhi is generally safe for tourists, especially in well-traveled areas around monuments, hotels, and markets. Standard travel precautions apply. Our licensed guides ensure you navigate the city safely and comfortably, avoiding tourist traps and ensuring authentic experiences.
