Sightseeing and shopping, in one long day from Delhi

Delhi to Jaipur is about 280 km and five to six hours each way, with refreshment stops. Early pickup, private car, and an English-speaking guide who joins you on arrival.

The difference between this and the standard day trip is that the bazaars are part of the plan rather than an afterthought — which matters, because Jaipur is one of the best buying cities in India and most day trips reach it at four in the afternoon with no time left.

Amber Fort

The hilltop palace complex above Maota Lake, begun in 1592. The imposing gateways, the courtyards climbing the ridge, the painted Ganesh Pol, and the Sheesh Mahal, where mirror fragments set into the ceiling turned a single candle into a sky of stars.

Jal Mahal

City Palace and Jantar Mantar

The palace, part of it still the royal residence, and the observatory next door where a 27-metre stone sundial still keeps time to about two seconds.

The bazaars

Where the day earns its length. Johari Bazaar for gemstones and gold — kundan and meenakari are the two techniques Jaipur is known for. Bapu Bazaar for block-printed cloth, tie-dye and mojari slippers. Tripolia for lac bangles, made over a flame in front of you.

Your guide's job here is your side of the price: what is handmade, what is machine-made and sold as handmade, and what the local rate is. Tell them plainly that you want to be taken where locals buy.
