Jaipur in a day from Delhi, which is possible but tight.
About 270 km each way on a good expressway, roughly five hours of driving across the day. That leaves enough for the two buildings that matter most, done properly rather than glimpsed.
Amer Fort
Built from 1592 above Maota Lake. The Sheesh Mahal, the mirror chamber where thousands of convex tiles multiply a single candle across the room. The painted Ganesh Pol. And the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water channels cut through the marble — air conditioning built on a hilltop in the sixteenth century.
City Palace
Still partly lived in by the royal family. The Mubarak Mahal textile collection, and the Diwan-i-Khas with its two sterling silver urns — the largest single pieces of silver ever made, built so a maharaja could carry Ganges water to England in 1901 rather than drink anything else.
Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar as time allows, and Jal Mahal on the lake as a view stop on the way.
