From your hotel, the airport or anywhere in Delhi NCR. Early, because the expressway is empty before seven and Gurugram is not after eight.

Amber Fort

Your guide meets you here, and the fort comes first because it is eleven kilometres out of town and unbearable by mid-afternoon.

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh on a ridge above Maota Lake. The courtyards climb the hillside: Jaleb Chowk, where returning armies were reviewed; the painted Ganesh Pol gateway; the Sheesh Mahal, set with thousands of convex mirror fragments so a single candle read as a sky of stars; and the Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running through channels cut in the marble.

The zenana courtyard held twelve queens' apartments arranged so that none overlooked another.

Jal Mahal

City Palace

Part of it still the royal family's home — the flag over Chandra Mahal tells you whether they are in. The armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas, the largest silver objects in the world.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments, UNESCO-listed. The 27-metre Samrat Yantra sundial still reads local time to within a couple of seconds; your guide can show you how.
