Pickup from 5am, because the road decides your day

Delhi to Jaipur is 270 km. Leaving at five puts you past Gurugram before it wakes and at Amber Fort by ten, which is the last hour the courtyards are still pleasant. Leaving at eight costs you both.

There is also a Jaipur-start option if you are already in the city.

Amber Fort

Begun in 1592 by Raja Man Singh on a ridge above Maota Lake, in the pale sandstone of the Aravallis.

The Ganesh Pol gateway, painted and gilded. The Sheesh Mahal, where thousands of convex mirror fragments were set into the ceiling so that a single candle would fill the chamber with points of light. The Sukh Niwas, cooled by water running in channels through the marble walls.

Jal Mahal

City Palace

Still partly the residence of the former royal family, with the armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns cast so a maharaja could take Ganges water on a voyage to England.

Jantar Mantar

Nineteen masonry astronomical instruments built in the 1730s by Jai Singh II. UNESCO-listed. The Samrat Yantra is a 27-metre sundial whose shadow moves visibly — six centimetres a minute — and it is still accurate to about two seconds.

Hawa Mahal

The honeycomb screen of 953 windows on Sireh Deori Bazaar, from the street opposite.
