The split matters. A Delhi driver can get you to Amber Fort; only a Jaipur guide can tell you what the mirror room was for. This tour uses both — the car and chauffeur for the day, and a licensed local guide who takes over on arrival.

Hawa Mahal

First stop, and the right one for the morning light. The Palace of Winds, built in 1799 as an extension of the City Palace zenana: 953 windows across five storeys, less than a metre deep for most of its height.

It was a screen rather than a residence — the women of the court could watch street processions without being seen from the road — and the lattice also accelerates airflow, which cools the corridors behind it and gives the building its name.

Amber Fort

The hilltop complex above Maota Lake, begun 1592. The Ganesh Pol gateway, the Sheesh Mahal with its ceiling of mirror fragments, the Sukh Niwas cooled by water channels, and the zenana courtyard where twelve queens' apartments were arranged so that none overlooked another.

Jal Mahal

From the causeway over Man Sagar Lake. Four of its five storeys are submerged; nobody goes in.

City Palace

Part of it still the former royal family's home. Courtyards, the armoury, the textile galleries, and the two silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas — the largest silver objects in the world, made so Madho Singh II could carry Ganges water with him to England.

Jantar Mantar

The 18th-century observatory of nineteen stone instruments, UNESCO-listed, where the great sundial still reads local time to within a couple of seconds.

If the day holds up, the bazaars — Johari for gemstones, Tripolia for lac bangles.

A long day: Delhi to Jaipur is 270 km each way, four to five hours in each direction.
