Delhi to Jaipur and back in a day, which is long but works.
About 270 km each way on a good expressway, so roughly five hours of driving across the day. Pickup runs from anywhere in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad or Faridabad, which saves an hour if you are outside the centre.
What you see
Amer Fort, begun 1592 above Maota Lake — a fort outside, a palace within. The Sheesh Mahal, the mirror chamber where thousands of convex tiles multiply a single candle across the room. The painted Ganesh Pol gateway, and the Sukh Niwas cooled by water channels cut through the marble.
City Palace, still partly lived in by the royal family — the Mubarak Mahal textiles, and the two sterling silver urns in the Diwan-i-Khas that remain the largest single pieces of silver ever made.
Hawa Mahal, the 953-window facade from 1799, and Jantar Mantar as time allows. Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake as a view stop on the way in.
