Indian markets reward local knowledge more than almost anything else a visitor does, and they can be uncomfortable to navigate alone — crowded lanes, persistent touts, and a price that moves depending on who is asking.

Pick your city

Jaipur is the strongest for buying: Johari Bazaar for kundan and meenakari jewellery and loose gemstones, Bapu Bazaar for block-printed cotton, bandhani tie-dye and mojari slippers, and Tripolia for lac bangles made over a flame in front of you.

Delhi is the widest: Dilli Haat for crafts from every state under one roof, Chandni Chowk's specialised lanes — silver in Dariba Kalan, spices in Khari Baoli — and Khan Market or Hauz Khas for the designer end.

Agra is marble inlay, the same pietra dura technique used on the Taj, worked by families who trace the skill to the men who built it, plus leather and dhurrie rugs.

Mumbai is Colaba Causeway, the Crawford Market fabric halls and the Bandra boutiques.
