Detailed Itinerary

05:00 AM – Early Morning Pickup

Your day begins bright and early with a pickup from your hotel in Delhi. Depending on your preference, a private vehicle will take you to the railway station to catch your superfast train to Agra. Traveling early allows you to make the most of your day and experience the iconic sights before the crowds arrive. Enjoy the convenience of a seamless transfer, avoiding the stress of navigating Delhi traffic in the morning. Your driver and guide will ensure a smooth start to your adventure, helping with luggage and train tickets if needed.

06:00 AM – Departure from Delhi

Board your superfast train, such as the Gatimaan Express, for a comfortable and speedy journey to Agra. This train, one of India’s fastest, covers the distance in approximately 2–3 hours. As you travel, you can sit back and enjoy the scenic landscapes passing by, including lush fields, villages, and glimpses of rural life along the Yamuna River. The early departure allows you to maximize sightseeing in Agra while avoiding the midday heat. The journey itself offers a relaxing transition from the bustling streets of Delhi to the historic charm of Agra.

08:30 AM – Arrival in Agra & Taj Mahal Visit

Upon arrival at Agra, your private driver and guide will be ready to meet you and escort you to the world-famous Taj Mahal. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a breathtaking symbol of love, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Marvel at the stunning white marble architecture, intricate inlay work, and perfectly symmetrical gardens. Walk along the reflecting pools and photograph the monument from various angles. Your guide will share the fascinating history of the Taj Mahal, including stories of its construction, symbolism, and enduring legacy. Spending sufficient time here ensures you can fully appreciate its beauty and cultural significance.

10:30 AM – Agra Fort Visit

Next, you have the option to visit Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This impressive fortress, built primarily from red sandstone, served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Wander through its massive gates, courtyards, and halls, including the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience) and Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience). Learn about its historical importance, from Mughal power struggles to architectural innovations. The fort offers panoramic views of the Taj Mahal in the distance, providing a unique perspective on Agra’s heritage and Mughal history.

12:00 PM – Lunch Break

After exploring the monuments, stop for a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant. Savor traditional Indian cuisine, including dishes such as butter chicken, dal, freshly baked breads like naan or roti, and aromatic rice. This is a perfect opportunity to recharge before continuing your tour and experience Agra’s culinary offerings. Please note that lunch costs are generally not included, allowing you to select your preferred dishes.

01:00 PM – Local Market & Souvenir Shopping

After lunch, visit Agra’s famous markets to browse for souvenirs and handicrafts. Agra is particularly known for its marble inlay work, which replicates the intricate patterns seen on the Taj Mahal, as well as leather goods, jewelry, textiles, and other traditional crafts. Take your time exploring the vibrant lanes, interact with local artisans, and pick up gifts or keepsakes to remember your visit. This shopping experience offers a glimpse into the city’s artisanal culture and lively marketplace atmosphere.

02:30 PM – Return Train to Delhi

Board your superfast train back to Delhi, settling in for a comfortable return journey. Relax and reflect on the day’s experiences, from witnessing the iconic Taj Mahal at sunrise to exploring historic forts and bustling markets. The scenic ride provides a quiet moment to unwind and enjoy the landscapes of Uttar Pradesh and northern India.

05:00 PM – Arrival in Delhi

Arrive back at Delhi Railway Station and transfer to your hotel, concluding your full-day Taj Mahal tour. This carefully planned itinerary combines history, culture, architecture, and local life, offering a seamless day-trip experience from Delhi to Agra. By the end of the day, you’ll have witnessed some of India’s most famous landmarks, created lasting memories, and gained a deeper appreciation for the Mughal legacy.

Taking the train from Delhi to Agra for a day trip to the Taj Mahal was so much better than driving. The train was comfortable, fast and we arrived in Agra in about 2 hours. Our guide met us right at the station and took us straight to the Taj. He was incredibly knowledgable about Mughal history and pointed out architectural details I would have completley missed. We also visited Agra Fort before catching the train back. Brilliant way to see the Taj without the hassle of a 4 hour drive.

The train tour to the Taj Mahal is definately the way to go. Picked up from our Delhi hotel at 6am, driven to the station, and on the superfast train to Agra by 7. The whole experience was well organized with no waiting around. Our guide in Agra was passionate about the history of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal and brought the love story behind the Taj alive. The return train got us back to Delhi by evening. A perfect day trip.

Good day trip to see the Taj Mahal from Delhi by train. The superfast train was comfortable with AC and reasonably spacious seats. Our guide at the Taj was excellent and very knowledgable. We also stopped at a marble inlay workshop which was interesting but felt a bit like a sales pitch. The only downside was the train delay on the return journey which added about 45 minutes. But overall a solid and efficient way to visit Agra from Delhi.

Absolutley loved this train tour to the Taj Mahal. I was nervous about driving in India so the train option was perfect. The guide in Agra was waiting for us at the platform and had everything planned perfectly. Seeing the Taj Mahal in person is truly a life changing experience, no photo does it justice. We had a nice lunch at a local restaurant and also visited Baby Taj which was beautiful and much less crowded. Highly reccomend the train option over driving.

Perfect way to see the Taj Mahal as a day trip from Delhi. The superfast train journey was smooth and we even got breakfast served onboard. Our guide was waiting at Agra station with a big smile and a sign with our names. He took us to the Taj via the south gate which apparently has shorter queues. The whole monument is even more breathtaking than the pictures suggest. We spent about 2 hours there which was plenty of time. Back in Delhi by 8pm, tired but so happy.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour uses the Gatimaan Express (Train No. 12050) — India's fastest semi-high-speed train, operating at up to 160 km/h. The Gatimaan Express departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in south Delhi (not New Delhi Railway Station) at 8:10 AM and arrives at Agra Cantt Station at 9:50 AM — a journey of just 1 hour 40 minutes covering 188 km. The return train (Gatimaan Express 12049) departs Agra Cantt at 5:50 PM and arrives back at Hazrat Nizamuddin by 7:30 PM. The Gatimaan Express offers executive chair car class with airline-style reclining seats, onboard catering, and air conditioning.
Yes — confirmed Gatimaan Express tickets are pre-booked and guaranteed as part of the tour package. Gatimaan Express seats sell out weeks in advance (especially during October–March peak season), and the tour operator secures tickets through advance booking quotas. You receive your confirmed e-ticket with PNR number at least 48 hours before travel. No waitlisting or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) — only confirmed seats. This is a significant advantage over self-booking, as independent travellers frequently find the Gatimaan Express sold out for their preferred date. Bring a government-issued photo ID (passport for foreign nationals) as it is checked onboard.
The package includes: Gatimaan Express confirmed return tickets (Delhi–Agra–Delhi), pickup from your Delhi hotel to Hazrat Nizamuddin Station (and return drop-off), a licensed Agra guide for the full day, private air-conditioned vehicle in Agra for all transfers between sites, Taj Mahal entry ticket (₹1,100 for foreign nationals + ₹200 mausoleum entry), Agra Fort entry ticket (₹550), and a sit-down lunch at a quality Agra restaurant. The guide meets you at Agra Cantt Station with a name board. Total time in Agra is approximately 8 hours — ample for a comprehensive visit to the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and lunch.
You spend approximately 2.5–3 hours at the Taj Mahal complex, which is generous for a thorough visit. This includes time at the main gate (Great Gate or Darwaza-i-Rauza), the charbagh garden with the iconic reflecting pool, the main mausoleum platform (where you must wear shoe covers), and the interior of the mausoleum to see the marble screens and cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Your licensed guide provides the complete historical narrative — the 22-year construction, 20,000 artisans, and the inlaid semi-precious stone work (pietra dura). Photography time is built in. For a sunrise experience instead, consider the Taj Mahal sunrise tour.
Yes — Agra Fort is included as the second major site of the day. After the Taj Mahal visit and lunch, you visit the massive 16th-century red sandstone fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site) that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638. The fort's highlights include the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), and the poignant Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where the aged Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son and spent his final years gazing at the Taj Mahal across the river. Your guide connects the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort narratives into a complete Mughal Empire story.
Yes — a sit-down lunch at a quality Agra restaurant is included, typically served between the Taj Mahal visit and the Agra Fort visit (around 1:00–2:00 PM). The restaurant offers North Indian and Mughlai cuisine — butter chicken, biryani, kebabs, dal makhani, fresh naan — with comprehensive vegetarian, vegan, and dietary-restriction options. The lunch venue is a proper restaurant (not a tourist-trap buffet) selected for food quality and hygiene standards. Inform your guide of dietary requirements when you meet at Agra station. Water and soft drinks are included with the meal.
The Gatimaan Express departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station — located in south Delhi, approximately 10 km from Connaught Place and 15 km from Delhi airport. This is NOT New Delhi Railway Station (which is in central Delhi near Paharganj). Your tour includes a hotel pickup transfer to the station, departing your hotel at approximately 6:30–7:00 AM depending on hotel location and Delhi morning traffic. The station has a clean waiting lounge and platform amenities. Arrive at the station at least 20 minutes before departure (8:10 AM). For hotels in south Delhi (Saket, Hauz Khas, Defence Colony), the station is very conveniently located.
The return Gatimaan Express (Train 12049) departs Agra Cantt at 5:50 PM and arrives at Hazrat Nizamuddin Station, Delhi at 7:30 PM. Your driver then transfers you from the station to your Delhi hotel, arriving at approximately 8:00–8:30 PM depending on hotel location and evening traffic. This gives you a full 8 hours in Agra (arrival 9:50 AM, departure 5:50 PM) — more than enough for a complete Taj Mahal visit, lunch, and Agra Fort. If you have an evening flight from Delhi airport (DEL), the driver can take you directly to the airport instead of your hotel — confirm this at booking.
With 8 hours in Agra, you can comfortably add one or two additional sites beyond the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Popular additions: Mehtab Bagh (₹300 entry — garden across the Yamuna River with a spectacular Taj Mahal backdrop, excellent for photography), Itmad-ud-Daula (₹110/₹210 — the 'Baby Taj,' an exquisite marble tomb predating the Taj Mahal), or Fatehpur Sikri (₹50/₹550 — Emperor Akbar's abandoned city, 37 km outside Agra, adds ~2 hours). Discuss your priorities with your guide at the start of the day. For a separate comprehensive Agra experience, see the Taj Mahal entry ticket tour.
The Gatimaan Express train tour offers several advantages over driving: Speed — 1 hour 40 minutes by train versus 3–3.5 hours by car (each way), saving 3+ hours of total travel time. Comfort — airline-style reclining seats with onboard meals versus sitting in a car through highway traffic. Reliability — trains run on schedule regardless of Delhi's unpredictable traffic jams, road construction, or accidents on the Yamuna Expressway. Experience — the Gatimaan Express itself is a uniquely Indian travel experience. The only advantage of driving is door-to-door convenience and flexibility for stops (such as Mathura or Sikandra en route). For driving options, consider the Delhi to Agra private tour.
Yes — the train tour is excellent for families. Children enjoy the Gatimaan Express experience (India's fastest train), and the total walking at the Taj Mahal is approximately 1.5 km on flat ground — manageable for children aged 5+. Children under 5 travel free on Indian Railways (without a separate seat). Children aged 5–11 receive a 50% discount on train tickets. Entry to the Taj Mahal is free for children under 15. The guide adjusts commentary for families, highlighting stories and details that engage younger visitors. The private vehicle in Agra can accommodate car seats if brought along. The day is long (12+ hours door to door) but punctuated by varied activities that keep children engaged.
Yes, the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for religious reasons. Please ensure your tour date for the Taj Mahal does not fall on a Friday.
Yes, foreign tourists must show their original passport or a high-quality digital photo at the entrance gates for security identification and monument entry.
Sunrise is the best time to visit the Taj Mahal. The gates open at 6:00 AM and the soft morning light creates the most stunning views. Arrive by 5:30 AM to beat the crowds and get the best photography conditions.
Yes, Delhi is generally safe for tourists, especially in popular tourist areas like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, and around major monuments. Booking a licensed local guide through AsiaByLocals adds an extra layer of safety and local knowledge.
The Delhi Metro is the fastest and most affordable way to travel between attractions. For tour experiences, our guides arrange private air-conditioned vehicles so you can cover Old Delhi and New Delhi comfortably in one day.
For popular sites like Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, and Red Fort, advance tickets are recommended to skip long queues. When you book a guided tour through AsiaByLocals, entry tickets and skip-the-line access are typically included.
